The equal employment opportunity commission (EEOC) is the federal agency that responds to workplace discrimination claims

The first step is to make a claim with the EEOC. Because of the high number of claims, the EEOC must process, they cannot respond to telephone calls. Instead, you must go online to their Public Portal, which will inform you of the claim process, and at that time they will schedule an intake interview with you. You will also be informed that you will have only 180 days to file your discrimination claim with the EEOC.

Given the system’s complexity and the laws governing racial discrimination, you should immediately consult with an employment lawyer that practices civil rights litigation. You will need to move quickly to protect your claims. At the very least, the attorney will guide you through the process and make sure you are alerted to the critical EEOC claim filing dates and the statute of limitations in filing a civil complaint.

Race is the most common form of employment discrimination. An employer engages in race discrimination when it makes employment decisions based on race rather than merit. Discrimination based on race occurs when an employer treats an employee or applicant for employment differently because of that person’s race or the physical features associated with that race.
