« Back to Glossary Index

It is unlawful for an employer to discriminate against an employee or applicant based on their sexual identity and orientation

LGBT stands for people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

Sexual orientation discrimination occurs when an employer treats an employee differently because of the employee’s sexual preference.

Employer discrimination usually takes the form of being subjected to adverse treatment such as being denied promotions and educational benefits, to being written up for minor infractions.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is the federal agency responsible for investigating discrimination claims including those based on sexual identity and orientation.
