The two major criminal classifications of crimes

There are crimes against a person and crimes against property. The term property is broadly construed to include all forms of theft and white-collar crime.

Crimes Against The Person Include:

Intentional acts of violence imposed by one against another causing physical and mental harm. Examples of physical crimes include:

  • assault and battery
  • manslaughter
  • murder  
  • rape
  • domestic abuse
  • sexual assault
  • kidnapping
  • torture

Crimes Against Property Include:

Intentional acts against another’s property that causes loss, damage, destruction, or defacement of that property. Examples of acts against property include:

  • theft
  • burglary
  • larceny
  • fraud
  • embezzlement
  • arson
  • robbery 
  • vandalism
