IRS taxpayer’s protection when communicating with the IRS
IRS employees are now required to give their badge numbers when requested. Each IRS agent and employee has their own badge number that internally identifies the employee or request.
- If you call the IRS, ensure you have a pad or pencil nearby. When you reach an assistant, you can quickly note the date, time of the call, name, and badge number of the IRS employee assisting you.
- Taking notes will also help corroborate your position if later there is any conflict about what was said.
- As an added precaution, it may be advisable to follow up your telephone conversation with a letter to the IRS in which you set down the contents of your discussion.
