Legal rights of non-married partners

A Domestic Partnership is a formal and legally sanctioned relationship between two people, irrespective of their sexual preference.

The rights of unmarried couples must comply with the same type of requirements and benefits available to married couples, including the right of survivorship.

Some of these benefits include the right to have your domestic partner included in your insurance coverage, visitation rights in hospitals or jails, and bereavement leave if a partner predeceases the other.

Having a domestic partnership agreement drafted by a competent family and divorce lawyer is strongly recommended. The wisdom of creating such an agreement as soon as possible is that this area of law is fluid and subject to sudden political shifts in the courts and legislatures.
