A common question is whether U.S. citizens living abroad can collect their Social Security benefits. In most cases, the answer is yes. However, suppose you are not a U.S. citizen and later return to reside in the United States. In that case, you must provide evidence of your non-citizen status from another country to receive benefits in the United States. If you work outside the United States, different rules may apply in deciding whether you are eligible to receive benefits.

If you are a U.S. citizen living abroad and returning to the United States, you must provide evidence of your U.S. citizenship status to continue receiving benefits.
