A tort is an act or omission that constitutes a civil wrong and causes injury or harm to another for which civil damages can be sought by the damaged party

There are intentional torts and those which are based on a legal theory of negligence. Torts can be wrongs committed by an individual or a business, such as intentional interference with economic advantage or the reckless disregard for public safety by knowingly manufacturing a defective product that causes physical or emotional harm to another.

Commonly pled torts include:

  • civil assault
  • civil battery
  • negligent or intentional damage to a person or property
  • civil fraud 
  • intentional infliction of emotional distress
