Mitigating factors that lessen the severity of criminal culpability and can reduce the punishment for a crime

Those mitigating circumstances surrounding the commission of a crime can reveal the lack of serious criminal intent or malice to harm a person or property.

These factors are considered compelling and traditionally have favored leniency towards the defendant from the prosecutor to the judge at the time of sentencing.
