« Back to Glossary Index

In U.S. federal courts, a Magistrate (formally referred to as a Magistrate Judge) is a judicial officer who assists and supports district court judges in managing their caseloads by handling certain legal matters.

Note:

Unlike Federal District Court Judges who are appointed for life, magistrate judges are appointed by district judges and serve for a specific term.
