A green card allows a person who is not a citizen to obtain permanent residence status

A commonly used term for the document issued by the INS as evidence of lawful permanent resident status. Most foreign nationals want to obtain a green card because it allows them to legally live and work in the U.S. and provides them with the future opportunity to qualify for U.S. Citizenship.

A permanent resident is required to carry their green card at all times.
