The major mental health professional manual (DSM) that defines and classifies mental disorders and its criteria

The most current version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is the DSM–5. It is considered the most authoritative and comprehensive mental health manual for defining and classifying mental disorders. The organization that publishes the DSM-5 is the American Psychiatric Association.

The DSM-5 is widely used by psychologists, psychiatrists, and certified counseling professionals to formulate a working diagnosis of a patient. The DSM-5 provides a descriptive menu of over 200 disorders and a combination of disorders, including associated symptoms and criteria for diagnosing a particular disorder such as:

  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Autism
  • Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder
  • Depressive Disorder
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Eating Disorders
