An alternative container is a funeral term used to describe an inexpensive box that is used to store human remains before cremation

Alternative containers are generally made from wood or cardboard and may or may not be fabric-lined. Although the term “alternative container” is far more popular, this type of box may also be referred to as a “cremation container.” These two terms are interchangeable and do not differ in meaning.
