An intentional assault and battery resulting in severe physical harm to the victim

An aggravated battery must result in actual physical violence. Threats of imposing serious physical harm alone are usually considered an assault, a misdemeanor in most jurisdictions.

An aggravated battery usually involves a deadly weapon such as a gun, knife, hammer, or other blunt instrument and is almost always charged as a felony.
