Whistleblower is fired for reporting the employer to the authorities for violating the law
Suppose you report your employer to the police or state or federal agency for violating the law. In that case, your employer is legally prohibited from firing you in retaliation for reporting them to the authorities – even if you are an at-will employee.
For example, suppose your employer illegally dumps toxic waste, and you report the company to the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”). In that case, the employer is prohibited from terminating your employment if the termination was retaliation for you “blowing the whistle” on them.
